Course reserves, in which high-demand course materials are made available to students via the library, is a service that Temple Libraries has offered for years. However, as textbook prices become more and more burdensome for Temple students, we saw a niche we could fill with a more sophisticated and streamlined reserves system.
Enter: Leganto, the new course reserves software that is now live for all instructors. Leganto integrates with both Canvas and Temple’s library management system to provide a streamlined reserves experience for instructors and library staff.
While our old reserves software forced you to fill out a separate form for every single item, Leganto integrates the library catalogue’s search function into the reserve requesting interface, allowing you to add any library material to your reading list with just a few keystrokes. You can also install a browser extension to pull content from the web and deposit it directly into your reading list. For anything you can’t access these two ways, you can request that the library step in by scanning or purchasing your course materials.
When implemented on other college campuses, Leganto has yielded millions of dollars in student savings each year. Creating a reading list of library materials and free web content makes it so your students don’t have to buy expensive textbooks. In addition, Temple University faculty are encouraged to add the Libkey Nomad extension to your regular browser(s). It enables one-click access to library content such as full-text articles and ebooks, wherever you find it on the web. Nomad works on scholarly publisher sites, Wikipedia, PubMed, Google Scholar and many others to help you avoid paywalls by creating a gateway to Temple Library content. Temple Libraries recently upgraded to Nomad++.
When the extension is installed, Nomad ++ enhances the search and discovery experience by identifying when the Libraries subscribe to paywalled content and sharing information on how to register for free access through the Libraries. Other new features include live chat access and citation management from any webpage that links back to library resources.
